The Vauban Fortifications

The Fortifications of the Ile de Ré have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, as well as the other Vauban constructions that are part of the Network of Major Vauban Sites. Like many of his works, seen from the sky, the ramparts of the fortifications form a star. Built-in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV, they were intended to protect the French coast from attacks by the English. Located on the seafront, you can see the sea from this historic monument.
It is possible to book a guided tour to discover all its secrets.

Ernest Cognacq Museum

Situated in the Hôtel de Clerjotte, a historic 15th-century building, this art and history museum features a variety of collections. You will find many items ranging from archaeology to fine art and ethnography. It also houses various exhibitions throughout the year and retraces the history of the island and its highlights. The building itself is a listed work of art, it is a former military arsenal.

The Citadel

Built-in 1681, Vauban's citadel is located to the north-east of the town. This military monument can be reached by crossing a small bridge through a stone gate. It is square and consists of four bastions and three half-moons. All around in the grass ditches, it is possible to see one of the island's flagship animals, the donkey. Also, donkey rides are offered to children in the Barbette park near the port.

Moreover, the building is open to the public almost all year round

The Port

If you have a boat, it is possible to reserve a place in this small marina for a day or more. It has an original shape since the basin surrounds a small island on which the old sailors' quarter is located. Close to the harbour, you will find shops, restaurants and cafes where you can rest after a long day's walk. Taste the local gastronomy from a terrace and admire the sea scenery with its fishing boats. Don't forget to take a look at the lighthouse at the entrance to the harbour.

The Observatory Bell Tower

The Observatory Bell Tower is located at the top of the church of Saint-Martin. To reach it during your visit, simply climb the hundreds of steps up to the top of the church to enjoy a breathtaking view of the whole town. Once on the terrace, you can also admire the bells.

This church has been subject to many attacks, in the course of its history it was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, attacked, bombed and ravaged by fire. It has been rebuilt and refurbished several times.

The Target Beach

The Ile de Ré has many beaches and is known for its beautiful scenery. The beach of Saint-Martin-de-Ré is located near the citadel and can be reached from the port. You can swim and dive from the small wooden pontoon, or even try your hand at sailing. You will also be able to see the famous little white cabins that can be rented to store your belongings. The ramparts all around the town mean that there are fewer beaches than in other parts of the island.
